The Bank of Taiwan Training Institute on the south slope of Yangmingshan Mountain preserves a century-old flag from the Bank's Penghu Branch. It would be fair to call this flag the crown jewel among the many antiquities in the Bank's collections.
A map of 1911 showing the location of the Bank of Taiwan's branches and representative offices clearly shows that the Bank set up its branches and offices in such a way as to facilitate the servicing of Japan's maritime trade routes.
When the Bank of Taiwan Kabushiki-gaisha formally opened for business in 1899, besides opening its head office in Taipei, in that same year and the year following it further opened branches in Tamsui, Hsinchu, Taichung, Tainan, Yilan, Penghu, Keelung, and Kaohsiung, thus establishing business presences in northern, central, eastern, and southern Taiwan.
In the 1910s, the Bank of Taiwan Kabushiki-gaisha gradually set up branches in Chiayi, Nantou, Pingtung, Hualien, Taitung, and Taoyuan, an indication that Japan was beginning to place greater importance on Taiwan's domestic economic development. In 1934 the Bank of Taiwan Kabushiki-gaisha set up a branch in Changhua, which was the last branch the Bank would ever open in Taiwan and brought to 16 the total number of branches opened in Taiwan and Penghu by the Bank of Taiwan Kabushiki-gaisha.
The Bank of Taiwan Kabushiki-gaisha's first branch in Japan was opened in Kobe, followed by three branches in Osaka, Tokyo, and Yokohama, and the Bank had even more branches in mainland China and overseas. Prior to the establishment of the Republic of China, the Bank already had branches in Xiamen, Hong Kong, Fuzhou, Shantou, Canton, and Shanghai. These branches were located in the coastal provinces of Jiangsu, Fujian, and Guangdong, all of which had important trade ties with Taiwan and also had relatively large numbers of Japanese residents.
In addition to establishing branches in mainland China, the Bank of Taiwan Kabushiki-gaisha also issued coupons in Xiamen, Fuzhou, Shantou, Shanghai, Jiujiang, and Hankou. Valid for use within only a limited area, those coupons become a sort of currency in marketplaces.
In the early years of Japan's Taisho period, the Bank of Taiwan Kabushiki-gaisha opened branches in the South Asian cities of Singapore, Surabaya, Semarang, Mumbai, and Jakarta, and to expand its business in the UK and the US the Bank also established branches or representative offices in London, New York, and Mumbai.
After war broke out between Japan and China in 1937, the mainland China branches of the Bank of Taiwan Kabushiki-gaisha suspended operations one after another, the only exceptions being the branches in Shanghai and Hong Kong. After Japanese forces began to score successes in battle, however, these branches were re-opened and the Bank also dispatched personnel to follow the Japanese army into Suzhou, Wuhu, Jiujiang, Wuchang, Haikou, Anqing, Nanchang, Sanya, and Nanjing to set up temporary business locations. The Bank helped the armed forces issue military scrip until the end of the war.
A review of the history of the Bank of Taiwan Kabushiki-gaisha reveals that the Bank was responsible for funding the development of Taiwanese enterprises so that Taiwan could become an important economic colony of Japan. One can also see that Japan at that time was working hard to build up its regional and global economic presence. Today, the Bank of Taiwan continues working to become a globalized financial institution. It now has eleven overseas branches, in Hong Kong, New York, Tokyo, London, Los Angeles, Johannesburg, Singapore, Shanghai, Sydney, Guangzhou, and Fuzhou.
The Bank of Taiwan Kabushiki-gaisha had the following business locations in 1939:
